Respectfully ModestIt was taught in the academy of R' Yishmael: To what was the Tabernacle similar? To a woman who travels in the street, with her train trailing behind her. (98b) The Gemara has explained at length how the drapings were placed when covering the Mishkan. What did the students in R' Yishmael's yeshiva add with their parable? The talmidim wished to compare the Mishkan to a lady. For when a lady goes into the street, and is thus making a public appearance, she will ensure that no part of her body remains exposed, ergo she will wear clothes which drag a little on the ground. The Mishkan was the source of the Shechina in this world and from it Hashem spoke to Moshe Rabbeinu. Although holiness was continually pulsating from it, and those who sought lofty spiritual heights could come and bask in the tangible holiness, it would not have been respectful to leave the Mishkan revealed for all. Therefore its roof extended right down until the desert sands. Please note that Halacha Lemaaseh should not be derived from this article. For halachic matters please consult your rabbi. |
