Spinning Connectiont was taught in the name of R' Nechemia, that the hair was washed and spun while still on the goats. (99a) Why was such an intricate method required to spin the goat's hair? The Sforno explains that it was spun while still on the goats, because the hair would be diminished somewhat in quality if it were first detached from it's place of growth. Examples of this are bee honey, cassia (a variety of cinnamon) and milk. [Incidentally, those interested in reading up about the Sforno, should read R' R Pelcovitz's fascination introduction to his classical translation to Sforno on the Torah. (Artscroll)]. Please note that Halacha Lemaaseh should not be derived from this article. For halachic matters please consult your rabbi. |
