A Cutter in the ReedsWhen Rav Nachman showed that he couldn't explain a braissa the Nehardeans said to him, "Your teacher was a reed cutter in a swamp". (95a) The Gemara says in Brachos (57a): One who dreams that he is walking through a swamp should expect to become appointed as a Rosh HaYeshiva. Rashi explains that canes that sprout in marshy areas represent disciples who continually develop their Torah skills. When the Nehardeans realized that Rav Nachman couldn't intereprate the braissa to their satisfaction, they commented, that his Rebbe, instead of nurturing him had actually stunted his Torah skills which resulted in his inability to explain the braissa.
