Sound Advice
At the end of Parshas Lech Lecha, Hashem commands Avraham Avinu to circumcise himself. A number of pesukim later, the Torah reports that Hashem visited Avraham, who was weak from the operation, in Eilonei Mamrei (the field belonging to Mamrei).
Rashi comments that it was a great honour for Mamrei that the Shechina actively made its presence known, on his property. The reason why he merited hosting the Shechina is because he gave advice (EITZA) to Avraham and encouraged him to circumcise himself. This Rashi arouses an outcry from all the commentators. Would the founding father of belief in G-d doubt the validity of an explicit order to take to the knife, from Hashem himself? Heaven forbid!
Amongst the many answers, the Chizkuni suggests a slight change in the reading of this Rashi, which changes the meaning drastically.
Our Mishna discusses a straw of various types of beans called ATZA. Of course Avraham circumcised himself, and readily too. He just asked Mamrei if he knew of any herbs that could be used as a painkiller or anti-septic for use after the operation. It was the wise Mamrei who informed him of the therapeutic powers of ATZA!
