THE
DAILY DAF MESSAGE OF THE BET ZVI DAFactory
Dorshey Hadaf pages are in loving memory of Sara Stella bat rav Yehuda MarcusShabbos 68
Who Was Munbaz?
Munbaz exempts a convert who lived among gentiles (and thus never learned the laws of Shabbos) from any chatas obligation. (68b)
Rav Reuven Margulies zt"l is puzzled by the strange name Munbaz. In fact, he writes that in all the Tannaic works (Mishna, Tosefta etc.) there is no mention of there being a disciple of R' Akiva by the name of Munbaz!
However the Medrash Rabba discusses a certain king Munbaz, the son of Ptolemy, who decided to circumcise himself after reading the Torah. He later became a proselyte. He is also mentioned in the works of Josephus. Rav Margulies conjectures that R' Akiva's disciple was in fact not called Munbaz and the Gemara merely borrows the name from the royal aforementioned proselyte, since the disciple was advocating the cause of advertent proselyte sinners
