Rav Avia was sitting before R. Yosef when his hand became dislocated. "Can one do this?" He asked. "It is forbidden." "What about this?" He asked further. "That too would be forbidden." In the meantime, his hand reset itself. Rav Yosef then said to him "what was your question, have we not learnt in a Mishna etc?" (148a)



Rav Avia was obviously experiencing a certain amount of pain, and Rav Yosef realized this and dealt with his question kindly. Only after Rav Avia's hand had healed itself, did Rav Yosef point out Rav Avia's 'ignorance', for while he was suffering, Rav Yosef did not want to "pour salt over the wound."
