Sleep Well!
Ravina said to Rav Sheravya: "It is true that at night Rava said so, however the following morning he recounted, and ruled differently, etc. (136b)
Why did Hashem create humans in a way that we have to sleep at night? Couldn't he have given us the strength to continue working around the clock?
The Vilna Gaon answers that the sole reason why humans must sleep, is for the benefit of the few tzaddikim in each generation whose souls rise up to heavens while they sleep and are taught Torah!
The Talmud is not a storybook, and the Amoraim used their words extremely sparingly. Rav Sheravya wishes to qualify his words – why did Rava change his mind, and if he changed his mind once, perhaps he changed it again? But since the first decision was at nighttime before sleeping and the second decision in the morning…
