IN LOVING MEMORY OF SARAH STELLA BAS YEHUDA MARCUS a.h. The BuilderBuilding does not apply to utensils, and demolishing does not apply to utensils. (122b) The Ben Ish Chai says that not only is this statement pertinent to the lows of Shabbos, it is in fact a fundamental rule of life. All possessions that one owns in this world are considered like 'vessels' (cups and saucers) which cannot be built. A building is a structure with permanence, but household items become worn out or break. The Tanna is hinting that one who builds up his worldly possessions cannot be considered as having truly built an everlasting building, for they do not remain to support the owner in the next world. Please note that Halacha Lemaaseh should not be derived from this article. For halachic matters please consult your rabbi. |
