Where Honour Is Due

If a person had a name of Hashem written on his skin, he should not wash or anoint that area, and he should not stand in a filthy place (120b).

The Pnei Menachem says that this Mishna alludes to one who studies and observes the Torah. He is the exhibit who the Torah presents for the public eye, and should take great care to honestly remain perfect in the public image. It is the Torah-man who carries the name of Hashem wherever he goes and must ensure not to disgrace the emblem of the Torah that he carries and causes others to despise the Torah.

A tale is told of two tzaddikim who were walking in the street. The 'gartel' of one of them fell off, and his colleague whisked it from the ground and wound it around him. "You are a living Sefer Torah" he exclaimed, "and it is a mitzvah to wrap a Sefer Torah."
